Mattress Pads and Pillow Tops

Mattresses now come with the option of a pillow top pad built right in. This can be good for support but bad in the long run as they are relatively impossible to change out. The usual wear and tear placed on a standard mattress is absorbed in the pillow top giving the mattress added life as well as comfort. Typically the mattress pad will add several years of life to your mattress and to your back, so you need to make sure you pick the right one for yourself or your family.

While most people buy the mattress bad for the extra level of comfort and support; they also function as protection from dirt and kids and pets by keeping the excess debris away from the actual pad itself. You can either make the bed softer or harder by adding a specific kind of pad, but you can not really do both at the same time unless you purchase two twin pads of differing density.

Varying Thickness in the Mattress Pad

You can purchase pads with different thickness and density to match the needs of each individual. Usually the difference is in the thickness and not so much the density but rather the material used to make the pad. The pads themselves are made from a lot of different material. Synthetic polyester is what the typical egg cart mattress pad is constructed of, while the high density of my memory foam mattress pad is made from a uniquely engineered foam designed to take the shape of your body.

Mattress covers are advertised as being able to help you get more support an comfort from your bed but down pads are nothing more than a sack stuffed with feathers. This will not provide anything in the way of support. An egg foam mattress pad will help you in a bind if you have some relatives staying over and you want to give them a little extra support for an older mattress, but it is only a short term solution.

The Comfort Gained

Mattress pads can only do as much as they are designed, so if you want one to add life and support to your mattress you need to plan on spending a little more. Memory foam for example will conform to your body and give specific support to trouble spots. The denser the pad the less heat it will absorb and the less it will conform to your body, the less dense pads heat up and shape around your body giving less support but more comfort.
